The Sumner County Sheriff’s Office is the chief law enforcement agency in Sumner County. The Sheriff Office is comprised of 51 full-time and 4 part-time employee, both sworn officers and professional support staff. The Office employs 26 sheriff deputies, 20 detention deputies, and 5 civilian employees. The Sheriff Office provides general law enforcement, detention and court services for the people of Sumner County in a service area of approximately 1,188 square miles. In addition, the Sheriff’s Office provides security to the Sumner County Court.

SHERIFF’S ROLE
The Sheriff, elected by the residents of Sumner County, is the chief executive of the Sheriff’s Office. He manages a 185 bed detention facility as well the 26 sheriff deputies, 20 detention deputies, and 5
civilian employees.  The Sheriff’s Office has one patrol station located at 610 E. Hillside on the north end of the City of Wellington Kansas. The Sheriff provides full time 24 hours law enforcement coverage for all of Sumner County.

GENERAL SERVICE AREAS
The Sumner County Sheriff’s Office is organized into four general service areas which includes the following:

  • Office of the Sheriff
  • Law Enforcement Services (Operations)
  • Detention Facility Services
  • Court Services (Civil Process)

Law Enforcement Services or Operations
The Sumner County Sheriff’s Office provides law enforcement services for all of Sumner County. In the unincorporated (non-city) areas, and in the following cities of South Haven, Geuda Springs, Hunnewell, Mayfield, Milan, Milton, Anson, Ashton, Corbin, Dalton, Drury, Peck, Perth, Portland, Riverdale, Rome and Suppesville. The Sheriff’s Office serves as their sole law enforcement, providing a full range of law enforcement services including patrol, traffic and investigative services.

Detention Services
The Sumner County Sheriff’s Office operates one detention facility. Both male arrestees and females are booked at the Sumner County Detention Facility.  The jail has 185 beds with daily population that varies day by day. The Sumner County Detention Facility is also a contracted housing facility.

In order to provide critical services to a daily inmate population that varies, detention is supported by a state-of-the-art food services, comprehensive medical services, laundry, commissary, and inmate processing services. The inmate’s are provided a number of educational and rehabilitative programs aimed at improving the reentry success of those returning to our communities.
